VW BEETLE EXHAUST SYSTEMS
The standard exhaust for VW Beetle models is a relatively simple system. It consists of an inlet manifold (the pipes that connect the silencer to the engine), the silencer itself, and the tailpipes. However, the exact design of the VW Beetle exhaust changed slightly over the years, so it important to ascertain exactly which type of VW exhaust system your car requires...
FIRSTLY, check your engine size and whether it is single port or twin port version. If you are unsure, check the code on your engine crankcase and consult the chart below:
| Codes beginning |
Engine size |
Single or Twin port |
| D |
1200cc |
S/P |
| F |
1300cc |
S/P |
| AB, AR * |
1300cc |
T/P |
| H, L |
1500cc |
S/P |
| B |
1600cc |

| AD, AE, AF, AH, AJ, AK, AS |
1600cc |
T/P |
| * 1300cc engines with 'AR' engine codes have an unusual configuration of pre-heat pipes, with two pipes per side instead of one. If you have one of these 'twin hot spot' engines you must fit a 'twin hot spot' exhaust or else swap to a 'single hot spot' inlet manifold. |
IMPORTANT: Please check your engine code before ordering - many Beetles do not have their original engines, so using your car's production year as a guide is not advisable.
VW CAMPER VAN EXHAUST SYSTEMS
The standard exhaust for VW buses is entirely dependant upon the age of the bus. Spilt Screen buses and many Bay Window models had Beetle engines in (see above chart) and used similar silencers. However, from the early seventies onwards, many buses were fitted with the larger, more powerful 'Type 4' engines, as detailed below:
| Codes beginning |
Engine size |
Produced |
| CA, CB, W |
1700cc |
1971-1973 |
| W, AW, AP, ED |
1800cc |
1973-1975 |
| CJ, CU, CV, GD, GE |
2000cc |
1976-1982 |
All 'Type 4' engines use the same simple exhaust system, regardless of the engine's size.
However, later T25 buses were fitted with water-cooled engines, which had a more complex VW exhaust system. Please contact us for assistance with these models.
AFTERMARKET EXHAUST SYSTEMS
SSP offer a huge range of aftermarket VW exhaust systems to suit any style of VW - from buggies and trikes to cal lookers and street cars.
However, there are a large number of variables to consider when ordering a non-standard VW exhaust, including: ground and bodywork clearance, size, style, noise rating and coatings. In addition you will need to decide upon an appropriate 'header' - the pipework that connects your aftermarket silencer to the inlet manifold.
With so many options to consider we normally advise discussing your needs with the sales team at SSP before placing your order. You can email sales@streetstyleandpower.com or call (during UK business hours) on +44 (0)870 991 5402. Advice is free and we're happy to help!
