What is a VW Camper Van?The answer is a little more complex than it appears. Many people use the term 'VW Camper' as shorthand for all VW Buses and Vans. In fact, for many years Volkswagen never actually produced a 'Camper' at all - they produced a generic base-model, the VW Type 2, which then had a camper van interior (furniture, bed, stove, etc) and roof added by other companies, such as Westfalia, Danbury and Dormobile. As such, VW Camper vans are defined by the two things - the age of the Type 2 base model and the manufacturer of the interior. For the purposes of buying VW Camper parts (unless the parts are specifically for the VW Camper Van interior) the age of the vehicle is the most important thing... - 1950-1967: Type 2 - T1 (more commonly known as the 'Split Screen')
- 1968-1979: Type 2 - T2 (more commonly known as the 'Bay Window')
- 1980-1991: Type 2 - T3 (more commonly known as the 'T25' in the UK)
