Torsion Bar Front Suspensions
Beetle Front Suspension
There are two types of torsion bar front suspension fitted to the Beetle. The first is the 'king and link pin' type, which was used up until 8/65. After this date a more modern type was installed using ball joints. If you are unsure about which type of front axle your car has, then the easiest way to distinguish between the two, is by the shape of the shock absorber 'towers' (where the top of the shock absorber is fixed). The early type of axle has vertical towers, while the later type lean outwards. See the pictures below for clarification. The two types of beam are not interchangeable - so it is not possible to get disc brakes on an early car, by simply swapping beams. 1302 and 1303 Beetles have a completely different front suspension, which is covered on a separate page.
