At VW Heritage we are making a sustained effort to reduce our impact on the environment. We have taken the following positive action:
CARBON BALANCING & THE WORLD LAND TRUST
- We support the World Land Trust (www.worldlandtrust.org) in its reforestation and habitat protection projects.
- All our business flights are carbon balanced by The WLT. Funds are used to purchase and protect the rain forests that most effectively absorb the planet’s growing carbon emissions.
- All our remanufactured engines also do their bit to aid reforestation – An additional donation of £5.00 is made to the World Land Trust for every engine we sell. click here for further details of this scheme.
RE-USE & RECYCLING
- All the wood from pallets, crates, etc is recycled, helping to prevent deforestation. It is stored and collected in bulk, minimizing the emissions produced by collections.
- Cardboard boxes are reused, either in their original state or shredded to make a packing material to protect fragile parts during transit. Any additional cardboard is recycled.
- The nature of our business makes an entirely 'paper-free' office impractical, but we actively strive to use as little paper as possible. Where paper is used, it is then either shredded into packing material or recycled.
- We also recycle the metal, plastic, glass waste produced by our business and staff.
- Decommissioned hardware, such as computer monitors, are ethically disposed of – either donated or broken down for component recycling.
- Our business has an inherent interest in recycling. Our core ‘Remtec’ engine range, for example, are remanufactured units - giving a second life to original VW crankcases.
ENERGY CONSERVATION
- Steps are taken to minimize power consumption. All non-essential systems and devices are shut down outside of business hours. Office lighting is used only as required, not by routine – on bright days the electrical lighting is switched off. Air Conditioning is used sparingly – never on timer or by default.
- Our staff are encouraged to utilize bicycles, public transport or car sharing wherever practical in their journey to work. We have also set-up ‘home offices’ for key staff, keeping non-essential travel to a minimum.
- Imported parts are sent by sea rather than air whenever possible, keeping emissions to a minimum.
- Whilst older cars do not have the emission controls of modern vehicles, the restoration of a classic vehicle keeps a new car off the road and an old one off the scrap pile - reducing the energy required for both car production and decommissioning.
These initiatives demonstrate our commitment to positive environmental action, but are not exhaustive – we continually strive to find new ways of conducting our business in a ‘green’ and ethical way.
