Monthly Club Meet

The VW Heretics meet was born out of a lunchtime conversation between a couple of members of the VW Heritage staff, something along the lines of “We’ve got a big car-park, a shop, a warehouse full of VW bits, and we’re smack in the middle of Sussex, why don’t we set up a meet?”

The seed was now well and truly sown, but there was a few pieces of the puzzle which needed putting into place before the 1st meet could be arranged. Once approval for the meet had been granted by Heritage group MD David Ward, then the PR onslaught began, after all you can’t have a meet without cars or people can you?

Following a good few hours of scouring the internet for all the local VW clubs and forums the Heretics (as it had now been christened) message had been spread far and wide. A local burger van was located (being on an industrial estate has its benefits) and its services procured for the night. Soon enough the day of the first meet rolled around, and a few frantic weeks of “papping” the VW scene was about to show it’s worth, the weather was good, especially for April, and within a couple of minutes of the kick-off time VW’s started to appear from both ends of the estate. It seemed the PR mission had worked as around 80 cars turned up, representing both air and water cooled VW’s.

Not ones to rest on their laurels, the Heretics team set about making hay whilst the sun shone (I wonder how many other clichés I can fit in this sentence?) and started promoting the next meet for all it was worth, fast forwarding to the night of the second meet, word had obviously got round, as Heretics was visited by in excess of 120 cars, pulling in numerous mag featured and cover cars, the only changes to the existing formula were to bring in a “peoples choice” award for car/bus/buggy of the evening, the lucky winner receiving a £25 gift voucher to spend with the Heritage group.

Occurring on the third Thursday of every month (between April and September) the meets have proved very successful, and with the full support of the local scene will carrying on growing into one of the South-East’s premier VW meets. By offering something somewhat unique in its acceptance of the VW marque as a whole as opposed to differentiating between those cooled with a water pump and those cooled by air seems to have been a major factor in the success, with the air-cooled owners appreciating the water pumpers and vice versa. So if you’re in the area, and fancy joining Heretics for one of their evenings, then come along, in this instance, being non-conformist is the way forward
